What’s the product?
Extra-virgin, cold pressed rapeseed oil, with a smooth, nutty flavour – perfect for cooking, or for using cold in dressings and sauces. It’s a multi-award-winning product, most recently picking up a Taste of the West Gold in 2019.
Who’s behind it?
Bath Harvest Rapeseed Oil is produced on Debbie Keeling’s family farm in Wilmington, 6.5 miles south west of Bath.
What’s the story?
Debbie starting producing rapeseed oil in 2011 as a diversification for the 650-acre farm, which forms part of the Newton Duchy of Cornwall Estate. Crop rotation is really important to keep soil healthy, so Oil Seed Rape is a useful rotation break crop for the farm. Once it’s harvested, the seed is stored in a purpose-built seed barn until needed, and the oil is made in small batches so it’s never hanging around in storage – it’s always fresh and flavoursome. The rapeseed oil is traditionally cold pressed, a single chemical-free process that preserves all the natural flavour and nutritional benefits (of which there are many, but the most important is that the unsaturated fat of rapeseed oil is a much healthier alternative to saturated fats – it’s delicious and it’s good for you). Finally, there’s absolutely no waste from the process, because the by-products can be used as a high protein cattle feed elsewhere on the farm. So, it turns out rapeseed oil is brilliantly useful at all different stages of production – how cool is that?
Why we love it…
The fabulous nutty flavour of this oil is just heavenly in a salad dressing, and its high smoke point makes it great for cooking too. You don’t have to take our word for it, either – we know of many chefs and serious foodies who use it in their kitchens, including the team at the Michelin-starred Pony & Trap in Chew Magna.
